Introduction
The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) promotes excellence in the molecular life sciences in Europe through targeted programmes and activities. Established in
1964, the founders of EMBO showed an incredible vision when they established
the organisation. They were true motors of change, even revolutionaries,
who raised the level of biological research in Europe by adhering to
the highest standards of scientific excellence. Keeping faith with their
vision, their principles and standards are a guide to our activities
today.
The EMBO membership includes some of the leading researchers in Europe
and represents a highly dynamic cross-section of the life sciences community.
The organisation elects new members annually on the basis of proven
excellence in research. Members number more than 1300 today with a further 80 associate members worldwide. Forty-eight scientists from the EMBO membership have received the Nobel Prize and others have strong links with industry. EMBO Members provide invaluable input to the organisation creating a permanent forum through which the knowledge, experience and people
necessary for EMBO activities can crystallise.
EMBO is funded predominantly by the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), an intergovernmental organisation comprising 27 member states. Together with EMBO, EMBC promotes a strong pan-European approach to research and its membership includes most European Union states as well as some neighbouring countries.
EMBO employs a team of specialised staff with the academic and professional
profile to meet the varied requirements
within all sectors of it's work. To complement this expertise, the organisation establishes
strong co-operation with qualified and reliable partners which often
result in lasting international collaborations.
This co-operation
includes governments, National Commissions, Parliamentarians and International
Organisations. Other partners come from the media, schools, cultural
and scientific institutions, private-sector partners and related institutions
dispersed throughout Europe and beyond. In particular EMBO works with the European Molecular
Biology Conference (EMBC), the European Molecular
Biology Laboratory (EMBL), European Life Sciences
Forum (ELSF) and the Initiative
for Science in Europe (ISE) to facilitate dialogue knowledge exchange and dissemination of good practice shaping strategies and specific programmes within the scientific community.
